The city is never a final form..." Josep Ramoneda

There exists a city that's always on the brink of critical mass, a constantly fluctuating no-place – a frontier space. It is on this 'edge' where urban exteriors become internalised, leaving the city free to inscribe certain visual metaphors on the psyche of its inhabitants.

The publication of this second Graflit anthology of contemporary South African comic art coincides with the 20th anniversary of the dawn of our democracy, and with Cape Town's auspicious year as World Design Capital. Good reasons to anchor its theme in the here and now - Cape Town 2014.

As a city, Cape Town expresses itself in a variety of 'scapes: neighbourhoods and work environments, cultural and recreational spaces, political and personal encounters. It also occupies interior spaces in the minds and experiences of its inhabitants. Graflit 2014: Urban Interiors focuses both on the city itself and on the idea of Cape Town in the artist's mind. The project has provided the artists, most of whom live or have lived in Cape Town, with a personal space to create and toy with juxtapositions, tensions and epiphanies that they have experienced or imagined in their encounters with the Mother City.

Each artist was required to create a black and white comic that links to a gallery piece. As was expected, the results are varied and exciting. Adding to the challenge was the decision to print the anthology on a Risograph printer. This machine is increasingly being seen by comic artists and small publishers worldwide as a way for artists to take back the means of production of their own work, liberating their artistic practice from the world of industry and commerce. Hence this publication, produced as a limited edition art book, is entirely hand-made by the artists themselves. The Risograph does have specific strengths and limitations, and to some extent this edition was a bit of a learning exercise. The works reproduced herein demonstrate what works best. Once again the strength and beauty of hand-drawn linework asserts itself!

This anthology is a labour of love - the artists receive no more than a complimentary copy for their efforts, and the production team receive very little in the way of remuneration for the long hours they have put into it. In particular, Graflit 2 owes its existence to Su Opperman, who came up with the theme, coordinated and managed the project and liased personally with the artists, and Jean de Wet, who designed the publication, provided his Risograph printer and printed and collated every page himself.

Graflit 2014 brings together the CCIBA, Stellenbosch University's Centre for Comic, Illustrative and Book Arts, the Youngblood Africa Arts and Culture Development Foundation, who once again provided their fine gallery in the Beautifull Life Building for the exhibition and launch, and Mamba Media, who once again facilitated the evolution of the process. Artfarm, an emerging art collective managed by Keda Gomes, also lent their marketing and social media expertise to the project.

The CCIBA is committed to the promotion and development of comic art, illustration an book art in South Africa and this project is further evidence of this commitment. We are grateful for the support and encouragement of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Prof Johan Hattingh, the members of the CCIBA Board and our project director, Prof Keith Dietrich, who continues to hold open a space for comic art in the halls of academe.
