Cartoons for Africa at Africartoons

Africartoons was first launched in 2008 on the occasion of Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday with a collection of international cartoons celebrating his political life and celebrity.

Packed with cartoons gathered from the continent's greatest political cartoonists, tells a story of Africa and its view of the world. Starring many of the world's most colourful characters and scripted by events that would rival any fictional plot, Africartoons invites you to follow the chronology of news stories as they unfold... or dip into any author or subject to take a serendipitous news safari with us.

Encouraged by the success of that venture, and inspired by Mandela's own appreciation for the contribution that editorial cartoons can make towards a healthy democracy, it was decided to broaden the scope of the Africartoons site to include editorial cartoons from all published cartoonists in Africa, and to eventually include cartoons from overseas cartoonists about Africa. The objective of the Africartoons website is to promote freedom of expression through cartoons.

Africartoons also hopes to encourage and develop the art of political cartooning throughout Africa by giving it greater exposure and bringing cartoonists from all over the continent closer together, and closer to practitioners in the rest of the world as well. The CCIBA is proud to be associated with Africartoons.
