A lecture series founded by philosopher Alain de Botton in 2008 and humorously titled “Sunday sermon” takes place most weeks at the increasingly popular The School of Life — a book shop, art and workshop centre and cultural movement based in central London. The school's main focus operates with the intention to develop emotional intelligence through workshops, reading and culture-focused learning. In this terrific lecture by de Botton, he goes on to explore how we can reclaim what Brainpickings.com's Maria Popova describes as the "core soul-soothing function of art" from the grip of "empty elitism" and "sterile snobbery", focusing on seven prominent psychological functions of art.
