The Creative Jewellery Design and Metal Techniques Division offer a 5-day course in jewellery design and production. Design and make your own wearable jewellery pieces in the jewellery division's fully equipped studios. Projects include a ring, bracelet, pendant and a pair of earrings

No previous experience is required to register for this course as the level of techniques are basic to intermediate. Projects are explained and accompanied with step-by-step demonstration of traditional techniques. All equipment and sterling silver will be supplied. Working materials are sold as needed for example: semi-precious beads, saw blades, drill bits and copper.

Experienced aspiring jewellers can use this course as an opportunity to experiment with advanced projects under the guidance of a qualified facilitator.

Verna Jooste has been making jewellery since she graduated with a higher diploma from Natal Technikon in 1991. She has taught at the Natal Technikon, the Peninsula University of Technology and currently at the Stellenbosch University’s Department of Visual Arts. She has augmented her training with the attendance of international jewellery workshops and symposia, exhibits her work regularly and her pieces can be seen in the SABC art collection. Before moving to Cape Town, she had a studio at the Bag Factory in Fordsburg for four years, her commissions include a public artwork for the Faraday Market and making Christmas trees for the City of Johannesburg.

Participants will the have the option to work freely on their own projects under the tutorship of Verna Jooste. A basic 'Beginners Projects' outline has been set for those who have no formal training or experience in jewellery design if they so choose.


A series of copper earrings or pendants

Sterling silver chain bracelet

A cuttlefish cast silver pendant in combination with semi-precious beads.

Basic rings


Precision marking, drilling, sawing, and filing.

Buffing and smoothing edges as well as light polishing.

Doming and shaping metal.

Casting sterling silver into ingot molds and cuttlefish molds.

Making round wire, jump rings and hook clasps.

Stringing pearls and beads

Bending, soldering and polishing a ring.

Various techniques for creating surface textures and patterns.


Simple domed flower earings.

Chainmaille Spiral neckpiece.

Knitted choker or earrings.

Stack rings with cabochon bezel settings.

Wave bangle or earrings.


Knitting and spool knitting sterling silver wire.

Metal manipulation by forging.

Soldering techniques.

Etching and photo etching metal

Advanced students are welcome to continue with any previously acquired techniques and projects of their choice as well as make suggestions for new projects.
